The mental health epidemic is real!

In today’s world, it’s no secret that social media has become a ubiquitous part of our lives. Whether it’s scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, we all spend a lot of time on social media. But what many of us don’t realize is that overusing social media can have some negative impacts on our mental and emotional health.

One of the most significant negative effects of overusing social media is what is known as “zombie scrolling.” This term refers to the mindless and aimless scrolling through social media feeds, without any specific purpose or goal. According to research, zombie scrolling can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and loneliness.

One study published in the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology found that participants who spent more time on social media reported higher levels of depression and anxiety. Another study published in the Journal of Adolescence found that excessive social media use was associated with increased feelings of loneliness and social isolation.

So why does overusing social media lead to these negative feelings? One reason is that social media can create a sense of “compare and despair.” When we scroll through our feeds and see everyone else’s highlight reels, it’s easy to feel like we’re not measuring up. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt.

Another negative effect of overusing social media is that it can confirm our biases. When we surround ourselves with people who share our views and opinions, it can be easy to fall into the trap of confirmation bias. This means that we’re more likely to believe information that confirms our preexisting beliefs, and ignore or dismiss information that contradicts them.

A study published in the journal Psychological Science found that people who spent more time on social media were more likely to believe fake news and misinformation. This is because social media algorithms are designed to show us content that is most likely to engage us, rather than content that is accurate or informative.

OK, so what’s the solution?

If you’re looking to be more mindful about your phone usage and social media habits, we’ve got some scientifically-proven tips that can help.
